More about our speakers this month…
is the author of the graphic memoir Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother, and Me (2010) and the horror/historical fiction comic Agnes, Murderess (2019). Her current project is a collection of short comics about grief and loss following the medically-assisted death of her partner in 2020. Sarah is an assistant professor in the School of Creative Writing at UBC in Vancouver, where she has developed and taught undergraduate and graduate comics classes since 2012. She believes strongly that studying and creating comics benefits all students, from dedicated cartoonists to those who use comics as a tool for brainstorming and problem solving.
Colossive Press
We’re Tom and Jane Murphy (plus Vince, our feline chief of staff) – eclectic producers of zines, comics and books, based in Penge, South-east London. Among other things we’re the keepers of the Gordon Gibbens photo archive (graffiti/street photography); the official historians of Croydon Spaceport; and the publishers of the handmade Colossive Cartographies (included in Broken Frontier’s “Ten UK Small Press Comics You Need to Own” for both 2020 and 2021). We’re also proud supporters of charities including St Christopher’s hospice, Maggie’s cancer support, Cats Protection, Art Refuge and Age UK.
Ali Hodgson
Ali Hodgson is a values-led graphic artist and graduate of The Royal College of Art. She’s on a mission to make the world a better place though visual storytelling and has a particular interest in communicating complex social, psychological and ecological issues.
Her latest comic book release, Jumping Mouse, is the first volume in a graphic memoir-in-progress that was long listed for the 2021 LDComics awards. It’s based on her experiences of dealing with a serious illness that led her on a mysterious journey to mountains of Spain.
Ali currently works, teaches and exhibits internationally and lives on the magical Isle of Man.
