Dana Mashoian Walrath is an award-winning cartoonist, writer, and anthropologist. An Armenian American, she weaves together her family’s history of survival, her training in anthropology, and a deep commitment to visual storytelling in The Book of Genocides, an immersive graphic history that traces ten genocides over five centuries and reveals the recurring patterns of dehumanization and land theft at their core. Her talk is titled “The Book of Genocides: From Interactive Art Installation Back into Comics”. A MacDowell Fellow, Fulbright Scholar, and Atlantic Fellow, Walrath has published work in The Nation, The Lancet, Slate, on public radio, and in numerous anthologies, including Menopause: A Comic Treatment—an Eisner Award–winning collection named one of The New York Times Best Graphic Novels of 2020. She is also the author of Aliceheimer’s, an award‑winning graphic memoir on dementia, and Like Water on Stone, a verse novel about the Armenian Genocide.

Chie Hosaka is a Japanese graphic novelist and illustrator based in Nottingham. The writing of her debut graphic novel, ‘Nina’, was supported using public funding through Arts Council England’s Developing Your Creative Practice grant and project grant, where she was mentored by author-illustrator Emily Howarth-Booth. In 2025, ‘Nina’ was long-listed for the First Graphic Novel Award. The novel tells the story of a grieving 32 year-old woman who moves back in with her busy-body widow mum. Inspired by Chie’s experience as a Japanese migrant woman, the book explores grief, trauma, second-generation migrant identity, pregnancy-loss and motherhood. In the talk, Chie will discuss her creative processes, sharing sketchbooks and early drafts to explore the inspiration behind the novel, the line between autobiography and fiction, love of analogue processes and how she funded & managed the project from an idea to self-publishing. Chie teaches Graphic Design at Nottingham Trent University as a visiting lecturer.

Dr Nicola Streeten is a UK-based award-winning graphic novelist and comics scholar. Her publications include graphic memoir ‘Billy, Me & You’ (2011), ‘The Inking Woman’ (2018) 250-year illustrated history of British women’s cartoonists, ‘UK Feminist Cartoons and Comics: A Critical Survey’ (2020) based on her PhD research. In 2009 she co-founded LDComics which she directed until 2025. Nicola will be talking about her graphic novel “YIELD”, published in November 2026. The novel is based on her great uncle, as a founding member of the radical, experimental Black Mountain College, North Carolina (1933-1957). It draws on archival research, memory and fiction to tell a story of repression within a progressive context. Nicola received two Arts Council England awards to see the book to completion. She will be reflecting on the process of making a work so different to her graphic memoir, published fifteen years ago and how the industry has informed her creative decisions.Instagram: @nicolast.reeten
