LDC Online Comics Fair

COMING SOON : 1 – 31 July

LDComics is celebrating 15 years! In 2009, Dr Nicola Streeten and Sarah Lightman launched Laydeez Do Comics “to champion comics work based on life narrative and the drama of the everyday. Streeten and Lightman shared an interest in comics and graphic novels that were not about superheroes, but were focused on the domestic and autobiographical.

Since then, we’ve changed our name to LDComics, become a Community Interest Company, hosted an annual festival from 2018-2020 in conjunction with a prize for graphic novels in progress, set up a mentoring programme and residencies, delivered an international British Council project and delivered workshops and talks. Most importantly we have continued to host our monthly events hosting guests’ illustrated presentations, welcoming everyone to attend free of charge.

To commemorate our fifteenth anniversary, we’re hosting an Online Comics Fair in July. You voted for proposed promotional graphics – and chose a winner.

Stay tuned! We will be announcing our FABULOUS Exhibitors in March.

FAQS

  1. Is there a standard size for the comics?
This size is up to the creator. LDC recommends a standard size: either in paper size, or a trim size typically used by a favourite publisher so that it’s ready to go if one wishes to print it later, or pitch to a publisher. Please also see TIPS for more information.
  2. Are the comics sold in the fair physical books?
The online comics fair is a digital fair, which means that when the customer buys a comic, they will only receive a downloadable link to download a portable document file (PDF) of the comics. No physical copies will be mailed.
  3. Are there pricing standards? Does LDC set the pricing for the comics?
The pricing is set by the creator of the comics (generally related to the length of the book). The price will be set in pounds since LDC is based in the UK. Also refer to next question…
  4. Does LDC take a commission of the sales?
No, LDC does not charge any additional commissions. However, Stripe (the e-commerce company that handles the finances of each  transaction) charges a fee – approximately 4% of the sales, which we will pass along to the exhibitor when we pay the earnings. Additionally there may be conversion fees that affect the sales prices which would also affect the income taken for comics sold. Please be aware of both of these when pricing your comics.
  5. How will the exhibitors receive payment for the sales?
LDC will be recording the sales, and processing payments once the fair is over and aim to get everyone paid by 30 August. Please note that the income paid will reflect any fees imposed, including Stripe transaction fees and conversion fees.
  6. If one cancels participation in the fair, is there a refund?
At this point, it’s too late to receive a refund as the fees have been invested in designing and programming the e-commerce site. If the exhibitor can find someone else to take their place in the fair, we can refund the fee to the original artist once we receive payment from a new exhibitor.
  7. What if one changes their mind about the comics one proposed at the the time of the application?
Changing your mind is one’s prerogative.
  8. Are the comics produced for the fair all new?
We encourage our exhibitors to create new, original pieces that haven”t been published elsewhere, but we will not be enforcing this.
  9. Does LDC own the comics produced in the fair?
No, the exhibitors grant LDC permission to sell their comics exclusively on its e-commerce platform for the duration of one month, 1 -31 July. Afterwards, the creator decides how the comics are distributed.
  10. Are there any guidelines on how to prepare one’s comics for online sales or creating a PDF for the fair?
We have published TIPS here, and you can see a replay of the Production 101 class, if you need additional guidance here.
