Have you made a start on your graphic novel and are looking to move it forward? Have you a little (or no) experience using Procreate and would like to develop your skills to assist your graphic novel work?

 Join award-winning graphic memoirist Dr Nicola Streeten and graphic designer and comics artist April Nash in the peaceful surroundings of The Grange, a former rectory in Norfolk, for this structured course. You will receive tuition and full accommodation as part of this enjoyable creative time with a small group of like-minded participants.

Nicola will guide you through a series of practical drawing, writing and planning exercises to focus on character development, dialogue and narrative structure in your story. This will be complemented with April’s structured introductory tutorials on using Procreate. There will be private time for you to reflect and develop your ideas in response to prompts, along with one-to-one sessions with Nicola and April. By the end of the course, you will have created a personal timeline for your next steps and established a confidence in your aims.

Everyone is welcome to join, however you will be asked to bring your an Ipad + Apple Pencil with Procreate App installed.

Basic art materials will be provided, however we recommend you bring materials you like to work with.

The Grange provides:

  • A private room with a desk.
  • Wifi in all rooms and throughout the house.
  • All linen and towels are provided.
  • Toilets, shower, and bath are shared access.
  • Use of the communal kitchen, a library with an extensive collection of graphic novels and art books and living room with workstations as well as access to the extensive gardens and grounds.
  • Meals: Vegan/vegetarian breakfast, lunch, dinner. All food allergies and needs will be discussed in advance to ensure options for you.
  • Breakfast and lunch will be provided for you to help yourself to.
  • Hot drinks available for you to help yourself to throughout your stay.
  • The evening meal will be communal, and we ask for all participants to commit to joining.
  • If you are travelling by train, collection from Downham Market train station on

Monday at 3.30pm and return to Downham Market train station on Saturday by 3pm is included in the price. Should your arrival/departure times be different to this we ask you to plan your own travel arrangements, a taxi costs approx. £50 each way.

4pm: Arrival at The Grange to settle in and look around. Enjoy a communal evening meal followed by short introductory illustration presentations from everyone in the group.
Tuesday 11 June
10am-12.30pm: What is your narrative? Workshop led by Nicola Streeten
12.30-4pm: Lunch and free time to prepare for the afternoon workshop.
4-6pm: Who are your characters? Workshop led by Nicola Streeten
6.30pm: Drinks and Presentation by Nicola Streeten
7.30pm: Dinner

Wednesday 12 June
10-12.30: Procreate: The Basics Workshop led by April Nash
12.30-4pm: Lunch and free time to prepare for the afternoon workshop.
4-7.30pm: One to One 50 min tutorials with April or Nicola
7.30pm: Dinner

Thursday 13 June
10-12.30: More Procreate Workshop led by April Nash
12.30-4pm: Lunch and free time to prepare for the afternoon workshop.
4-7pm: One to One 50 min tutorials with April or Nicola

Friday 14 June
10-12.30: Creating a Scene Workshop led by Nicola Streeten

Saturday 15 June
10-12.30: Forward planning Workshop led by Nicola Streeten

2pm Departure from The Grange to Downham Market train station

Cost: £580 to include facilitation, tuition, meals, accommodation, and collection from and return to Downham Market station at specified times. Attendance is limited to 6 participants in single occupancy rooms with shared bathroom facilities.

About Dr Nicola Streeten
A UK-based multi-award-winning graphic novelist and comics scholar. Her graphic memoir Billy, Me & You (Myriad Editions, 2011) was followed by The Inking Woman (Myriad Editions, 2018) a 250-year illustrated history of British women’s cartoonists. This was complemented by theoretical publication UK Feminist Cartoons and Comics: A Critical Survey (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020). She is currently working on ‘Yield’, her second graphic novel about Permaculture.

Nicola is founding director of LDComics – a women creator-led forum championing graphic novel works, particularly by women. She has extensive experience facilitating comics based projects and teaching comics in a variety of contexts. She worked as artist facilitator on British Council “Creating Heroines” project from 2018-2021 working with over 40 women artists from 8 S Asian countries. In 2022 she received a British Council International Collaboration award 2022-23 to deliver REVEAL! Women’s Comics East Africa-UK with a Kenyan partner, storying gender and climate change. Nicola has been teaching at University of the Arts, London and Kingston University on Illustration and Animation BA courses since 2014.

About April Nash
Working predominantly with digital software and an iPad, April Nash (she/her) has been a professional graphic designer and illustrator for over fifteen years. With her early career as an in-house designer at Orchard Toys Ltd, she’s created illustrations for numerous games, puzzle and books as well as for national campaigns.

After a brief dalliance as a secondary teacher, April now works as a Graphic Designer for a company in Norwich where she lives with her husband Doug and a house rabbit called Freddie. April loves to create autobiographical comics and illustrations using traditional hand drawings and adapting them to photoshop and procreate.

About The Grange
The Grange Projects hosts artist led integrated creative activity at The Grange in Norfolk. Everything that takes place here is made possible by the generosity and support of the owners of The Grange. Located in the small rural village Great Cressingham, Norfolk, The Grange was originally built as a rectory. This wonderful Georgian house is set in 10 acres of tranquil gardens and grounds.
